In general, if a green card holds stays outside US without any US ties for a long time, s/he technically abandons permanent residence. In practice, doing so may not trigger any activity from USCIS as such and the person may be able to enter US again. However, later on if s/he applies for US citizenship, s/he will likely be in trouble.
Usually people try to come back once every 6 months to maintain permanent residence. However, technically doing so is not sufficient; the key is maintaining ties in US in addition to not remain outside for too long.
You may be able to obtain advance permission from USCIS to remain outside US for a certain period of time without the risk of losing permanent residence. You may want to consult with an immigration attorney to know the options you have for your specific case.

The benefits:
- Logistics: Members identified/verified, not anonymous
- Communication: Improved one-to-one communication rather than hunting for information in forums. Perhaps even a newsletter updating you on what's going on, what's being planned, what are the activities.. and action items.
- Funding: Sustainable funding for lobbying efforts, media relations, etc.
- Live Nag-Free! No one asks you what you've contributed in every second post, you don't have to wear the ID tag of your contribution amount around your neck to prevent such questions
- Community: Be part of a community with a national presence, with local chapters.
- Legal advice: Get free legal advice in monthly/quarterly/periodic conf calls/webinars
- Jobs: Job postings or referrals on IV members-only site
- Business opportunities: Come together with other IV members to explore common business opportunities
- Myriad other benefits that memberships in professional organizations come with, such as travel discounts for instance.
The down-side:
- We may lose about half of our "members"

This item deals with "Wage per week " in this field after i checked out my application lawyer gave the whole years income instead of weeks income. as i enquired he said even though "/year" is ideal to mention immigration officers know that this amount is same as that of Labor and thats not an issue . any comments please?

I have been arrested on Domestic Violence call by my wife ( of cource false allegations) about month back. Police investigation did not find any evidences and never sent file to DA for filing hence DA never filed charges.
Now USCIS requesting following
1) Please submit an arrest record and final court dispositions for each of your arrests. Court dispositions must be in the original and bear the stamp and/r seal of the appropriate court or clerk. If a court disposition or police record is not available, you must provide official or certified evidence from the appropriate law enforcement agency or court confirming the record in unavailable. Please note, these documents must either be the original or certified copy.
How to get court deposition or evidence that no charge are filed against this arrest?
I have filed petition for expunging arrest record but that will take a while to conclude.
Please advice what proof I can send to USCIS that this arrest did not even result in charges in court.

My Lawyer Called Me That File Is Ready To Go But Vsc, Tsc And Csc Are Not Excepting Any I-140 Now, They Has To Be File At Nsc. Yesterday I booked a visa appointment at the Mumbai consulate and no where on any of the forms did I specify that I was from Maharashtra but the appointment letter that comes out at the very end says in bold "State of Residence: Maharashtra" which is wrong.
I also canceled the appointment and re-booked it with the same outcome.
Has anybody had this happen to their case? Just trying to gauge how concerned should I get about this. Everything else on the forms looks correct but this one little thing.
